Premio NAHJ Ñ del Año a periodista-autora de El Paso Times
EL PASO - La Asociación Nacional de Periodistas Hispanos (NAHJ, por sus siglas en inglés), acaba de otorgar a la periodista Diana Washington Valdez, reportera de El Paso Times, el Premio Ñ de Periodismo Escrito del Año Frank del Olmo 2008, informó un portavoz del organismo no gubernamental, en un comunicado de prensa.
Según el portavoz, la diarista y escritora fue seleccionada "por su incansable labor periodística, al arriesgar su propia integridad para dar voz a quienes no la tienen, cualidades alentadas por Frank del del Olmo".
"Aun cuando muchas de los reportajes fueron escritos sobre los asesinatos de las mujeres en Juárez, tu labor muestra perseverancia y consistencia, y redactados de tal manera que llamaron la atención en nuestro país", agregó el vocero, en la misiva enviada a Washington para informarle sobre el galardón.
La entrega de la presea será llevada a cabo el 12 de septiembre próximo, en la cena de gala anual "Noche de Triunfos", en el National Press Club, 529 14 Street N.W., en Washington D.C. (www.nahj.org).
Durante su carrera periodística, Washington Valdez ha publicado reportajes sobre diversos temas, como salud, narcotráfico, ecología y justicia penal.
Tuvo a su cargo igualmente la cobertura de la frontera mexicana, específicamente Juárez, para El Paso Times, en donde publicó extensos reportajes sobre la serie de asesinatos cometidos contra mujeres en esa frontera, desde 1993 y tópicos policiacos. Es autora del libro "Cosecha de Mujeres: Safari en el Desierto Mexicano", precisamente sobre qué hay detrás de estos cientos de feminicidios sin esclarecer.
